Summary
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is planning to construct an engine layover facility at the Rockport Commuter Railroad Station. The Public Archaeology Laboratory, Inc. (PAL) was contracted to assist the funding agencies, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the MBTA in meeting their review requirements by conducting a historic architectural reconnaissance survey. That survey revealed evidence of a mid- to late-nineteenth century Eastern Railroad passenger depot and steam locomotive turntable and engine house within the project area . Therefore, PAL also conducted an instensive (locational) archaeological survey/site examination to evaluate those recources and make recommendations concerning the avoidance and preservation or mitigation of impacts to any identified National Register eligible resources
