Summary
The carnival rolls in after the midnight hour of a chill Midwestern autumn eve. Boyhood companions James and Will watch a midway come to life, their emotions a riot of fervor, fear, bravado, and doubt. They can sense that this is the time in which innocence must vanish in the smoke of disillusionment and horror. The carnival has come to town to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two curious boys learn all too well the cost of wishes and the stuff of nightmares
